The flat grid laid out in 1956 and built, unusually for its decade, as a tract open to any buyer who could sign for one: straight streets, low houses on even lots, a driveway and a garage beside each, and a single front door between the sidewalk and the living room. Fifteen minutes from the base.

A sixties tract of single-family houses on flat streets: an attached garage facing the road, a service door in the side wall of it, a front entry set back under a short porch, and a sliding door onto the patio at the back. Three ways into one house, and only one of them was ever thought about. Sixteen minutes.

The oldest working part of a young city: shops and small offices along Main Street with rooms above some of them, short residential blocks behind the row, and new buildings filling the gaps between them. Thirteen minutes, the shortest run on this map, because the base sits here.

The newest housing in the city, built dense beside the line and the Great Mall: podium blocks over parking, a gate at the ramp, a lobby off the sidewalk, a mail block in the corner of it, and unit doors along interior corridors. Fourteen minutes.

Single-family houses on flat streets at the southern edge of the city, the same layer as the tracts north of it but a little older and a little more settled: mature trees, wide driveways, detached sheds, a gate down one flank of most lots. Eighteen minutes, which is exactly the citywide average.

Condo and townhouse blocks set around shared parking and landscaping: a gate at the drive, a pedestrian gate off the sidewalk, a door for each building, a unit door behind it, and a management company that sets the rules for everything outside your own frame. Nineteen minutes.

The streets that climb east out of the flat city toward the park: larger houses on larger parcels, long driveways, retaining walls and stepped yards, a pedestrian gate beside most vehicle gates, and very little light on the upper blocks after dark. Twenty-two minutes.

The business park and warehouse blocks at the north-west corner of the city: glass entries onto the street side, roll-up bays and man doors at the back, push bars on the inside of every rear door, parking that runs the length of the block, and yard gates carrying padlocks older than the current lease. Twenty-four minutes, the longest run inside the city.
