A smart lock belongs to the door that is yours. It answers to you, it carries codes for the people you choose, and it has no effect whatsoever on the street gate, the garage ramp or the mailbox block downstairs, all of which stay on the complex system under the complex rules. Getting those two things straight is most of what callers want from this page, and it is cheaper to get straight before the hardware is bought than after.
In a rental, whether a lock may go on the door at all is worked out on the call, between you and the building, before anyone spends money. A great many go on with the original lock bagged, labeled and screwed back at move-out, which is where most tenants here land, and planning for it at the start costs nothing.
How long the visit takes is decided by the door and not by the carton. These locks are machined to expect a bore of two and one eighth inches, a backset of two and three eighths or two and three quarters, and a leaf that still hangs square, and tract doors on this side of the valley are unreliable on all three. Decades on three hinges will drop a leaf far enough that the bolt starts arriving on the lip of the strike rather than in the pocket.
