The lift, the lean and the pull that nobody remembers learning
Ask somebody on a Parktown street how they lock their front door and you get a short piece of choreography for an answer. Lift the handle a little. Put a shoulder against the middle of the door. Pull it toward you with the left hand while the right hand turns the key. Then a second turn, harder, and a sound halfway between a click and a grind. Nobody in the house remembers being taught this. The youngest person in the house does it too.
That routine is a door telling you something in the only language it has. A deadbolt is a steel bar that slides through a hole in the frame, and it is supposed to go through the middle of that hole with clearance all the way around. When it starts arriving at the edge instead, the only way to make it go is to move the door, and moving the door is what the lift and the lean are for.
The houses this happens in were built in one run, one slab at a time, in the tracts that filled this city in the sixties. Parktown, Milpitas Manor, the flat streets in Sunnyhills laid out a few years earlier. Sixty-odd years of soil, seasons and slammed doors are enough to move a frame by an eighth of an inch, and an eighth of an inch is all it takes.
What actually moved, and it was not the lock
Start with the hinges, because that is where most of it is. A solid exterior door weighs enough to work its top hinge loose over decades, and the screws in that hinge were often short ones driven into the soft edge of a jamb rather than long ones reaching the framing behind it. As the top hinge gives, the whole leaf rotates a fraction and the outer bottom corner drops. The bolt, which is two thirds of the way up the door, swings down and inward with it.
Then the frame itself. Wood takes up moisture in a wet February and gives it back in a dry September, and a jamb that has done that sixty times does not come back to exactly where it started. Add the settlement every slab-on-grade house does in its first decades, and add the drying and shrinking of the framing behind the trim. None of that is damage and none of it needs alarming language. It is a building doing what buildings do.
Last, the small violences. A door that has been pulled shut hard twice a day for thirty years, a screen door spring that yanks it, a kid who closes it with a foot. Each one works the strike plate screws a little looser in their holes, and a strike plate that has shifted a sixteenth of an inch does exactly the same thing to the bolt as a frame that has moved a sixteenth of an inch. The difference is that the plate takes four minutes to fix.
Reading the door before touching anything
Three tests, all free, all under two minutes. First, swing the door wide so the leaf hangs in open air and throw the deadbolt with the thumb turn. It should run out and back with one finger. Now close the door and do it again. If it goes easily in the air and needs force when shut, the lock is fine and the alignment is not, and no new lock will change that.
Second, look at the strike plate on the frame. A bolt that has been landing on the edge polishes a bright crescent into the plate, always on the same side, and often pushes a little lip of metal outward at the mouth of the hole. Paint tells the same story: a chipped arc below the hole means the bolt has been arriving low, which matches a dropped hinge rather than a swollen jamb.
Third, close the door and look along the gap between leaf and frame from top to bottom. On a square door that gap is even, about the thickness of a nickel. On a settled one it closes up at the top on the hinge side and opens at the bottom on the lock side, or the reverse. That wedge shape is the diagnosis, and a phone photo of it taken along the gap is worth three paragraphs of description when you call.
Why forcing it is the expensive path
The bolt is the strongest part of the arrangement, so it is never the part that breaks. What breaks is everything around it. The key snaps, usually at the shoulder, usually in a cold month, and the long half stays in the cylinder where it has to be extracted before anything else can happen. The thumb turn spindle twists. The screws holding the lock case through the door work loose and the whole unit starts to move in its hole.
There is a quieter failure that matters more. A bolt that only goes half the way into its hole looks locked from the inside and is not doing the job the hardware was designed for, because the part of it that counts is the length actually sitting inside the frame. Households in this situation often do not know whether the door is bolted or merely resting, and the honest test is whether it throws with one finger.
So the sequence goes wrong in a predictable order. For a year it needs a shoulder. For a month it needs a shoulder and two hands. Then one evening the key breaks, and a fifteen minute alignment job in daylight has become a lockout at $129 to $246 with $48 on it because it is a quarter past nine. The fix, cheapest first
Almost always it starts at the top hinge. That means new screw positions, the hole in the frame opened in the right direction, the mortise cleaned up so the plate sits flush, and long screws into framing rather than into trim. It is unglamorous work and it is the single most useful thing anyone does to a tract front door, because a plate fastened into real framing changes what that door will stand up to far more than any lock on the shelf will.
Only after that does hardware come into it. A lock that has been forced for years can have a worn bolt, a rounded cam or a cylinder full of grit, and then replacing it with its hardware is $126 to $338. If the cylinder itself is sound and the household simply wants every exterior door running on one key while the technician is there, that is $30 to $47 per cylinder, with the second and third at the low end because the visit is already paid for. Anybody who leads with new hardware on a door that has not been checked for square is selling the part that was not broken.

Have it done in daylight. That is the actual advice, and it is worth money rather than being a platitude. One more reason not to wait. In a city where the block is empty from seven to seven, a door that needs a shoulder is a door that nobody else can open on your behalf. A house sitter, a relative or a neighbor handed a key will stand there turning it, decide it is the wrong key, and go home. That is the local version of this problem, and it is the one that shows up on the phone.
The thirty-second habit, twice a year
Pick two dates you will remember and walk the exterior doors. Open each one, throw the bolt in the air, close it, throw it again. Look at the strike plate for a bright crescent. That is the whole routine and it takes longer to read about than to do.
A door that passes both throws is fine for another six months. A door that fights on the second throw has just told you at the most convenient possible moment: the sun is up, nobody is locked out, and the repair is a Tuesday afternoon appointment instead of a call at half past eleven. That gap is the entire reason for the habit, and on these streets it is the difference between a plate with long screws in it and a broken key in a cold cylinder.
